Feeding the Future: Smart Ranching and the Southwest Center

Folklorist Maribel Alvarez and ethnobotanist Gary Paul Nabhan are giving a lot of thought to the future of a traditional local food, the beef taco. It’s part of their “Flavors Without Borders/Sabores Sin Fronteras” project, which looks at the shared culinary traditions of the Southwest, including Northern Mexico, Southern Arizona and New Mexico. Food and Memory

11 Jan

Recently, one of our Sabores members and friends, Linda Murray Bersok, wrote a book (published November 2010) called Storied Dishes: What Our Family Recipes Tell Us.  This is a wonderful book that includes recipes and stories from more than 50 women, including submissions from Sabores members.  We wanted to make our readers and fans aware of this book (available on Amazon.com) and let you know that, on March 12th Linda will be conducting a workshop at the Tucson Festival of Books, entitled “Storied Dishes:  How to Write Family History with Family Recipes”.  It should be a great workshop.  We will post more detailed information on the Festival of Books as we get closer to the date, but keep your calenders open for tons of literary fun on March 12th and 13th at the University of Arizona.

I also have a personal interest in the topic of food and memories.  I recently conducted a (very) small-scale research project about people’s memories and associations with food.  It was an incredibly interesting and informative project to conduct, and was also a whole lot of fun!  If you would like to read my paper, please feel free to take a glance at my blog: http://www.glikefood.blogspot.com/.  I, by the way, am Greer Flax, University of Arizona student in anthropology and animal sciences, and the current Sabores Sin Fronteras webmaster.  Thanks for reading!

Lecture and Book Presentation by Mexican Cuisine Expert

Diana Kennedy

Thursday, November 18

3:30pm to 4:30pm

Chemistry Building Auditorium Room 134

Acclaimed as the Julia Child of Mexican cooking, Diana Kennedy has studied Mexican food ways and culture for more than fifty years.

Her new book, Oaxaca al Gusto: An Infinite Gastronomy (University of Texas Press 2010) is an irreplaceable record of the traditional regional cuisines of Oaxaca. Organized by regions, the book presents three hundred recipes—most from home cooks—for traditional Oaxacan dishes. Fascinating notes about the ingredients, cooking techniques, and the food’s place in family and communal life accompany each recipe.

In conversation with renown UA ethnobotanist Dr. Gary Nabhan, Kennedy will talk about her amazing journey into the diverse state of Oaxaca and introduce the audience to one of the most outstanding and colorful cuisines in the world.

The event is sponsored by Sabores Sin Fronteras (Flavors Beyond Borders) a binational foodways alliance housed at The Southwest Center, UA.

During her visit to Tucson, Kennedy will also join regional foods writer and Native Seeds/SEARCH co-founder Gary Paul Nabhan and James Beard award-winning Chef Janos Wilder for a special fundraising event to benefit Native Seeds and Sabores Sin Fronteras: Thursday, November 18 from 6-7:30 p.m. The special event will take place at the Native Seeds/SEARCH Agricultural Conservation Center in Tucson, 3584 E. River Road. Tickets for the catered event are $75 per person. For more information on this event and for registration, go online to www.nativeseeds.org
